What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is the process of cleansing the skin thoroughly with two different types of facial cleansing products. The first cleanser is used to ensure that all makeup and sunscreen is removed from the surface of the skin, while the second cleanser is to remove pollution and any remaining dirt from the skin. First, as the very first step of the skincare routine, an oil based cleanser is used, either an oil cleanser or a cleansing balm, to help to dissolve the makeup and any remaining sunscreen on the skin. Next, a regular gel or foaming cleanser is used to provide a deeper cleanse to ensure all the dirt, pollution, and other impurities are removed from the skin, while also purifying and hydrating the skin, and strengthening the skin barrier at the same time.

What are the benefits of double cleansing?

By this point it may alrady be clear what the benefits of double cleansing are. With double cleansing, you are able to more deeply cleanse the skin and fully remove all dirt and impurities from the skin to ensure your skin is completely purified and also better able to absorb the following skincare products in the next steps of the routine. Clean skin is healthy skin and having properly cleansed skin can prevent clogged pores and acne, skin irritation, or a weakened skin barrier. Doing a single cleansing could potentially lead to a higher chance of skin irritation and clogged pores if the skin is not thoroughly cleansed.

Who should/shouldn’t double cleanse?

While double cleansing does have its benefits, it is safe to say that it may not be for everyone, or for all skin types. For those who have very dry skin, sensitive skin, or don’t wear makeup daily, then double cleansing every day may not be necessary for you. However if you are more prone to oiliness and irritation, or wear makeup every day, it could be a good step to cleaner and more purified skin.

So, is double cleansing neccessary?

While it is probably not necessary for those who have dry skin or don’t wear makeup to double cleanse every day, double cleansing is a great idea for those who wear makeup daily or have oily or acne prone skin.
